Steel weight formulas

Section dimensions are in millimetres; L is length in metres. Each formula gives one piece in kilograms. Multiply by quantity for the order total.

  • Rebar: d is nominal diameterπ × d² / 4 × L × 0.00785
  • Sheet: W is width, t is thicknessW × t × L × 0.00785
  • Rectangular tube: W width, H height, t wall[W × H − (W − 2t) × (H − 2t)] × L × 0.00785
  • Pipe: D outside diameter, t wallπ × t × (D − t) × L × 0.00785

Using the estimate when buying

Why can actual weight differ?

Dimensional tolerances, ribs, tube corner radii, welds and coatings affect actual weight. Use this for an initial estimate. Confirm billable weight against the order terms, mill specifications or weighbridge.

What about beams, angles and channels?

Use the standard or mill table for that exact section and size. Flanges, webs and corner radii cannot be represented accurately by a simple rectangle. Send the section, standard, size and length to sales.
